Overview
Social Network Video Controller ("the extension") is a free Chrome extension that adds playback, speed, and seeking controls to Instagram and Facebook videos. This page explains what data the extension collects, why, and what rights you have over it.
The extension does not require an account, does not know your name or email address, and does not read the content of the pages you visit — it only reads and controls the <video> element it adds buttons to.

What we collect
On install, the extension generates a random identifier (a UUID, not derived from any personal information) and stores it locally in the browser. Periodically, and once more when the extension is uninstalled, it sends the following to our backend:

We do not collect your name, email address, IP-derived location, browsing history, or the content of any page or video you watch. Our hosting providers' infrastructure may log IP addresses as part of ordinary web server operation (see "Who we share it with" below), but the extension itself never associates an IP address with your data.
If you choose to type something in the optional "tell us more" field when uninstalling, please avoid including any personal information — that field is free text and isn't reviewed before being stored.
Legal basis
We process this data on the basis of legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): understanding how the extension is used in order to maintain and improve it. We limit this processing to anonymous, aggregate-friendly, non-advertising usage data, and never combine it with any other source of identifying information.
How long we keep it
Once you uninstall the extension, your data is automatically and permanently deleted within 12 months. While the extension remains installed, we keep your data for as long as you keep using it, since that's the only way to measure engagement over time.
Who we share it with
The data is processed by two infrastructure providers acting on our behalf (data processors), neither of which uses it for their own purposes:
- Render — hosts the backend API that receives this data (Frankfurt, Germany region).
- Supabase — hosts the database where it's stored (Ireland region).
Both providers process this data entirely within the European Union — there is no international transfer of this data outside the EU/EEA. We do not sell or share this data with advertisers or any other third party.
Local storage on your device
The extension stores its random identifier and your usage counters locally using Chrome's
storage API — the same category of technology as browser cookies. This is used
solely for the extension's own functionality and analytics described above, never for
cross-site tracking or advertising.
Contacting support
This extension's Chrome Web Store listing links to a "Need help?" contact form — it is not part of the extension itself and works without any account or random identifier. If you use it, we collect the email address, subject (optional), and message you submit. Your message is sent directly to the developer by email; it is not stored in any database. We reply to the email address you provide, and if we need your random identifier to look into a specific issue, we'll ask for it there.
To prevent spam and abuse of this form, we also temporarily process the IP address the request comes from, solely to enforce a limit on how many messages can be submitted from the same network in a short time window. This IP address is kept only in the server's memory — never written to disk or a database — is discarded once that time window passes, and is in any case cleared whenever the server restarts.
The legal basis for replying to your message is carrying out a request you initiated (GDPR Art. 6(1)(b)) — you've voluntarily provided your email and message to get help. The legal basis for the temporary IP processing described above is legitimate interest (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)) in keeping this form usable and free of abuse.
Unlike the usage data described earlier on this page, emails sent through this form stay in the developer's mailbox under that mailbox's normal retention — there is no automatic deletion job for them. Sending itself goes through Gmail's SMTP relay (Google), acting as a processor for the technical delivery of the email; we don't share this data with any other third party.
Your rights
Under the GDPR (and similar laws elsewhere), you have the right to access, correct, or delete the data associated with your install, and to object to this processing.
Since the extension doesn't use accounts, the simplest way to exercise these rights is to uninstall the extension — this immediately stops further data collection, and any data already stored is automatically deleted within the retention period above. If you'd like it deleted sooner, or want a copy of what's stored, contact us at the address above; if you can provide the random identifier the extension generated for your install (found in your browser's extension storage), we can act on your request immediately — without it, we generally have no way to locate a specific record among anonymous entries.
Children's privacy
The extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change accordingly.
